Domain due diligence

Domain Name Digital Asset Screener

A domain name review begins with the exact registration and the purpose it would serve. A memorable name still needs an identifiable seller, a workable transfer route, understood continuing costs, and a plan for its use. Keep those questions separate from assumptions about future resale or search benefits. This framework helps turn a promising candidate into a set of conditions. Record what the purchase includes, which evidence supports the seller’s authority, and what must happen before the domain can support your project.

Domain acquisition checklist with ownership and renewal records

What to examine

Buy the name with context

01

Exact scope and authority

Record the domain and extension, then list every additional item included in the asking price. Establish who would sign the agreement and who can arrange delivery. Keep technical control, contractual authority, brand questions, and ownership of included creative work as separate matters requiring suitable evidence.

02

Transfer and continuing cost

Confirm the planned route with the registrar and identify any approvals or restrictions affecting it. Record the expiry date, steps, and evidence of completion. Separate the acquisition amount from renewal, transaction charges, and the services needed to operate the domain after it reaches the receiving account.

03

History and intended identity

Review the domain’s historical uses and current destination against the planned project. Preserve dated observations and unexplained gaps. Investigate brand questions in intended markets without treating a quick search as legal clearance. If the price depends on search history, give that assumption its own review.

A practical review sequence

Build your evidence record.

  1. 01

    Identify the package

Copy the name into the record and check it character by character. List the domain, content, logos, accounts, and services included. Ask for a transfer method and documentation for each component so a landing page does not define the scope by implication.

  2. 02

    Verify the delivery path

Identify the seller’s role and the party authorized to arrange the transaction. Request the registrar’s instructions for the change and document restrictions. Agree what would demonstrate delivery, and keep the proposed launch date conditional on a transfer timetable that has been checked.

  3. 03

    Review use and costs

Build a cost record covering acquisition, transfer, renewal, and operation over the project period. Examine historical use and brand questions. Keep confirmed charges separate from estimates, and identify any assumption that depends on selling the name to another buyer later.

  4. 04

    Prepare the handover

Assign responsibility for account access, registration contact details, renewal notices, and DNS administration. Identify the checks after delivery and any services that must continue working. Close the review with satisfied conditions, pending evidence, and a response if the package cannot be delivered.

Questions to resolve

Before you
go further.

Is the purchase price the main cost?

Record it separately from renewal, transfer charges, and services. The comparison depends on the holding period and operating use. Ask for terms covering the registration, and avoid extending an introductory or promotional price into future periods without evidence that it applies.

Does domain age establish value?

Treat the date as an observation in the record. Explain what the name would contribute to the intended project and which evidence supports that contribution. If the acquisition depends on a resale or search benefit, keep that assumption explicit and examine its limits.

What should delay a decision?

Pause when a mandatory condition is unresolved, such as unclear delivery authority, an unverified route, or a question about the proposed use. State the evidence needed to continue. A request for clarification becomes more useful when it identifies a decision consequence.
